Stormgate Leaves Early Access This August
A year ago, Frost Giant Studios, a team founded by veterans of Blizzard's legendary Warcraft and StarCraft series, launched their highly anticipated real-time strategy game, Stormgate, into Early Access. Now, the developers have announced that the title will officially leave Early Access and launch its full version on August 5th.
The full release will include the complete 12-mission story campaign, 'Ashes of Earth,' along with core PvP duels. The game's map editor, a vital component for any modern RTS, will also continue to evolve and receive updates. However, Frost Giant has been upfront about the fact that not all promised features will be fully polished at launch. The game will continue to receive regular updates and ongoing development post-release.
Ongoing Development and Future Updates
Frost Giant has outlined an ambitious post-launch roadmap for Stormgate. Instead of numbered patches, major updates will be given unique names. The first significant update, titled 'Ornithopter,' is planned for this fall and will introduce the initial version of the 3v3 online mode. Following 'Ornithopter,' players can anticipate subsequent updates named 'Peon' and 'Queen.' More detailed information about future content and the game's long-term vision will be shared in a comprehensive roadmap closer to the August launch.
Player Reception and Community Feedback
Currently, Stormgate holds a 'Mixed' review status on Steam, with approximately 50% positive reviews from over 7,000 players. Community feedback has highlighted several areas for improvement. Common criticisms from early access players include outdated gameplay mechanics, technical issues, concerns over monetization, and a general feeling that the game lacks originality, despite the developers' initial claims of revolutionizing the RTS genre.
The move from Early Access to a full release marks a significant milestone for Stormgate. While it signifies a more complete experience with a finished campaign and PvP, players should be aware that Frost Giant's vision for the game is still evolving. The August 5th launch is just the beginning of what the developers hope will be a long journey of continued updates and community engagement, addressing player feedback and expanding on the core RTS experience.
