Indie Games Delay Releases, Citing Fear of Hollow Knight: Silksong's Launch
In a move that highlights the immense anticipation surrounding Team Cherry's upcoming title, Hollow Knight: Silksong, two independent game studios have announced delays for their respective games. Both Panik Arcade's roguelike CloverPit and Aeternum Game Studios' metroidvania Aeterna Lucis are pushing back their release dates, openly admitting that competing with Silksong would be too challenging.
CloverPit Shifts Release to Avoid Silksong's Shadow
Panik Arcade, the studio behind the roguelike CloverPit, has decided to move its launch from September 3rd to September 26th. The developers candidly shared their reasoning, emphasizing Silksong's overwhelming popularity. "Silksong is the most wishlisted game on Steam today," Panik Arcade stated. "We believe people will love it, and they (like us) will play it immediately at launch. This also means Silksong will overshadow all other releases in the same period."
The studio added that while they appreciate a good challenge, this situation felt "too risky." Their primary goal is to ensure their game receives the attention it deserves, and by delaying, they aim to give both themselves and players time to enjoy Silksong without immediate competition. As a gesture of goodwill, Panik Arcade has extended the availability of CloverPit's demo on Steam. The game currently boasts over 400,000 wishlists, indicating a significant fanbase eager for its eventual release.
Aeterna Lucis Faces Dual Challenges, Delays to 2026
For Aeternum Game Studios, the creators of the ambitious metroidvania Aeterna Lucis, the decision to delay was more complex, driven by both the looming presence of Silksong and technical hurdles. Originally planned for September, the game's release has now been pushed back to a broader 2026 window.
"We have been working on Aeterna Lucis for over four years," explained Aeternum Game Studios, highlighting it as their most ambitious project to date. "After the announcement of Silksong's release date, we fully realized that our game would not receive the visibility it deserves. Competing with a phenomenon of this magnitude would be unfair not only to our team but also to you, the community."
Adding to the competitive concerns, the studio revealed they still lack the necessary development kits to launch simultaneously across all target current-generation platforms. This technical constraint, combined with the desire to avoid direct competition, led to the difficult decision. "Technically, the game is already complete, and we will use this additional time to perfect every detail," the studio confirmed, aiming to deliver the ideal gaming experience for their community.
Aeternum Game Studios also expressed gratitude towards Team Cherry, acknowledging their role in keeping the metroidvania genre vibrant and serving as an inspiration for their own work on the Aeterna saga.
The Ripple Effect of a Highly Anticipated Release
These delays underscore the significant impact a highly anticipated title like Hollow Knight: Silksong can have on the independent gaming landscape. Smaller studios, often working with limited marketing budgets, find it incredibly difficult to cut through the noise when a major release captures global attention.
While CloverPit and Aeterna Lucis are the first to publicly announce delays due to Silksong, they may not be the last. Other titles like the action-adventure Hell is Us and The Order of Giants DLC for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle are also currently slated to release around the same period as Silksong. Whether they will follow suit remains to be seen. For players, these delays mean waiting longer for new games, but potentially receiving more polished experiences that aren't lost in the hype of a gaming giant.
