Forza Horizon 5 Dominates PS5 Sales Charts
In a surprising turn of events, Xbox's popular racing title, Forza Horizon 5, has officially become the best-selling new release on PlayStation 5 for 2025. According to Rhys Elliott, an analyst from Alinea Analytics, the PlayStation 5 version of the game has sold over three million copies in less than three months since its release on the platform.
This marks a historic moment for the Forza series, appearing on a Sony console for the first time in 20 years. Previously, the game, which originally debuted in 2021, was exclusive to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. Its PlayStation 5 launch on April 29, 2025, quickly gained momentum, selling two million copies within just 25 days.
Setting New Sales Records
Forza Horizon 5's rapid sales success on PS5 stands out when compared to other notable PlayStation exclusives. For instance, Astro Bot, a flagship PlayStation platformer from 2024, took three months to reach the two-million-copy milestone. Similarly, Kojima Productions' Death Stranding 2 sold one million units within the same three-month period.
Just last week, Forza Horizon 5 surpassed Monster Hunter Wilds (2.9 million copies) to claim the top spot as the best-selling new PS5 release of 2025. While a temporary 25% discount likely contributed to this achievement, it undeniably signifies a massive success for Xbox's ventures onto rival platforms.
Xbox's Multiplatform Strategy Pays Off
The arrival of Forza on PlayStation is a direct result of Microsoft's evolving strategy, which embraces a more open approach to multiplatform releases. Back in January, Xbox head Phil Spencer famously stated, “There’s no sense in putting a fence around any game,” signaling a broader push for Xbox titles to launch on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation consoles.
This impressive sales performance for Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 demonstrates the strong demand for the game across different ecosystems and highlights the potential benefits of multiplatform strategies for both developers and players. It suggests that more Xbox first-party titles could find new audiences on PlayStation, benefiting the industry as a whole and offering players wider access to popular games.
