Obsidian Prepares Grounded 2 for Early Access, Hints at Broader Reach
Obsidian Entertainment is gearing up to launch Grounded 2 into Early Access on July 29. Executive Producer Marcus Morgan has indicated that the studio intends to spend as much time as necessary in Early Access to fully refine the game, just as they did with the original miniature survival title.
Like its predecessor, Grounded 2 will initially arrive on PC and Xbox platforms. However, the door remains open for releases on other consoles in the future. “We don’t want to stay in Early Access forever,” Morgan explained in an interview with Eurogamer. “But it takes time. The first game spent about two years in Early Access, which gave us the chance to listen to players and make important improvements. I think Grounded 2 will also need about the same amount of time — whatever it takes to get everything right.”
Cross-Platform Aspirations Beyond Xbox
Despite Obsidian being part of Xbox Game Studios, the original Grounded successfully ventured beyond Microsoft’s ecosystem. Last year, the first game launched on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, reportedly with promising results. When asked about a potential release for Grounded 2 on these other platforms, Morgan offered a cryptic smile, saying, “I can’t talk about that right now. But the original Grounded is already on all those platforms, so…” he trailed off with another smile, suggesting that more platforms are certainly a possibility down the line.
What to Expect in Grounded 2
A new story trailer for Grounded 2 recently debuted, showcasing fresh footage, the four main characters, and an “evil corporate lady” who is likely the sequel’s primary antagonist. Players can look forward to exploring a much larger world called Brookhollow Park, delving into icy dungeons, riding insects, and experiencing an overhauled combat system. The developers promise greater depth and variety, aiming to keep players engaged for longer periods and offer new challenges over time.
More details about Grounded 2 are expected on July 29, when the embargo for early access impressions lifts. Players will once again shrink down to the size of an ant and assert humanity’s dominance over insects on PC (via Steam and Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series. Grounded 2 will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. While there will be no Russian localization at launch, it's possible it could be added in future patches.
For players, the Early Access launch of Grounded 2 on July 29 marks the beginning of a new grand adventure. Obsidian’s commitment to a thorough development period, coupled with the potential for the game to reach more platforms in the future, indicates a promising journey for this eagerly anticipated survival sequel.
