Tokyo Game Show 2025 Attendance Dips Despite Record Exhibitor Numbers
The annual Tokyo Game Show (TGS) recently concluded, and the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA), the event's organizers, have released their post-show report detailing key metrics and offering a glimpse into what's planned for next year. While TGS 2025 set new records for the number of exhibitors and booths, it didn't quite manage to surpass its own attendance records.
Held from September 25th to 28th, TGS 2025 welcomed 263,101 visitors. This figure places it as the third-highest attended TGS event, following TGS 2021 (298,690 attendees) and TGS 2024 (274,739 attendees). Despite the slight dip in foot traffic, the event, themed "endless gaming playground," boasted an impressive 1,136 exhibitors from 47 countries and regions, marking a new record for participation. The Makuhari Messe convention center was abuzz with a diverse array of new games spanning various platforms, including home consoles, smartphones, PCs, and VR. The exhibition also showcased a broad selection of related merchandise, services, and products, highlighting the expanding reach of the gaming industry.
TGS 2025 was packed with engaging programs, featuring keynote speeches, the Japan Game Awards 2025 Future Division ceremony, and a special series of lectures conducted in collaboration with the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Japan Arts Council. These sessions provided valuable insights and opportunities for emerging talent aspiring to join the game industry.
Business engagements were also robust, with the Tokyo Game Show's matchmaking system facilitating 3,591 meetings. For those unable to attend in person, 21 official programs were streamed online across Tokyo Game Show's official YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), and Twitch accounts, as well as on platforms like Niconico. To ensure global reach, TGS partnered with DouYu and bilibili in China, and IGN in North America and Europe, to disseminate its content worldwide.
Looking Ahead to TGS 2026
Looking to the future, the organizers have announced that Tokyo Game Show 2026 will take place from September 17th to 21st. This will mark a historic first for TGS, as it will be extended to a five-day event, promising even more opportunities for developers, publishers, and fans to connect and experience the latest in gaming innovation. This extension signals a continued commitment to growing the event and solidifying its position as a premier global gaming showcase.
