Sony's Latest PS5 Update Enhances DualSense Connectivity and Adds Eco-Friendly Power Saving

A new system software update, version 25.06-12.00.00, has arrived for the PlayStation 5, introducing a range of interesting new features designed to improve player convenience and promote environmental sustainability. Chief among these are enhanced multi-device connectivity for DualSense controllers and a new power-saving mode for games.

Seamless DualSense Multi-Device Switching

Previously, connecting a DualSense controller to a new device, like a PC or smartphone, required a full re-pairing process each time. This latest update dramatically simplifies things. Now, your DualSense controller can support pairing with up to four different devices simultaneously, allowing for quick and effortless switching between them.

For example, you can use your controller with your PlayStation 5, then quickly switch it to your PC, or even connect it to your smartphone to enjoy Remote Play from your PS5. This added flexibility means players can enjoy their games more freely across various platforms.

Here's how to set up and switch your DualSense controller between devices:

  • First, ensure the light bar and player indicator on your controller are off. If they're on, press and hold the PS button until they turn off.
  • Press and hold one of the action buttons (Triangle, Circle, Cross, or Square) and the PS button for more than 5 seconds. The light bar and player indicator will flash twice.
  • On your desired device, enable Bluetooth and select the option to add Bluetooth devices. Your device will detect nearby Bluetooth devices.
  • Choose your controller from the list of detected devices. The light bar will illuminate, and the player indicator will flash according to the slot number.

To switch the controller from one device to another after initial setup, simply hold down the PS button and one of the action buttons (Triangle, Circle, Square, or Cross) for approximately 3 seconds. Each device can be assigned to a specific button combination for easy recall.

Introducing Power Saving Mode for Games

Sony Interactive Entertainment is committed to ambitious environmental goals, aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. In line with this, PS5 owners can now try out a new power-saving feature for supported games.

This mode works by reducing the game's performance to lower power consumption. When activated, VR mode will be unavailable, and some gameplay features might be limited. The power-saving setting can be enabled or disabled individually for each game that supports it. If the option is off or a game doesn't support it, performance and power consumption remain unchanged.

Currently, games like Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Demon's Souls, and the upcoming Ghost of Yōtei are slated to support this feature in future updates. When power saving is active and a game supports it, a special icon will appear next to the game's title in the control center's switcher.

To activate this feature, navigate to the settings menu, then 'System,' and select 'Power Saving.' From there, activate 'Use Power Saving.'

Additional System Enhancements

Beyond these major additions, today's update also brings several other improvements. It enhances the stability of DualSense, DualSense Edge, PlayStation VR2 Sense, and Access controllers. Players will also notice improved messaging and usability on certain screens, alongside an overall boost to system software performance and stability.

A concurrent update, version 13.00, has also been released for PlayStation 4 consoles, focusing on similar improvements to messaging and screen usability.

These updates collectively offer PlayStation players more control over their gaming experience, from how they connect their controllers to how their console manages its environmental footprint. The enhanced DualSense connectivity promises greater flexibility and convenience, while the new power-saving mode reflects Sony's ongoing commitment to sustainability, providing options for conscious gaming without sacrificing core gameplay where supported.
