Life is Strange TV Series Proceeds Without Original Game Developers

Original Life is Strange Creators Not Involved in Amazon TV Series

Last week, Amazon Prime Video announced its development of a TV series based on the critically acclaimed video game, Life is Strange. The adaptation is moving forward with Amazon MGM Studios, Square Enix, Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap. However, a notable absence from this list has quickly become a point of discussion among fans and even the original creators themselves: DON'T NOD, the studio behind the game's poignant narrative.

Christian Divine, the writer for the original Life is Strange, shared his thoughts on the news in a public post, stating that the original creators are the only ones not involved in the adaptation. This sentiment was echoed by Luc Baghadoust, an executive producer at DON'T NOD, further confirming that the studio responsible for Max and Chloe’s unforgettable journey is not participating in the upcoming screen adaptation.

Why Are DON'T NOD Excluded?

The exclusion of DON'T NOD from the TV series project stems from a historical divergence in vision. Following the release of Life is Strange 2, the collaboration between DON'T NOD and Square Enix ceased due to creative differences regarding the future direction of the Life is Strange universe. DON'T NOD originally envisioned Max's story in the first game as a complete, self-contained narrative, but the publisher aimed to expand the franchise. After this split, new games in the series, such as Life is Strange: True Colors, were developed by Deck Nine, while Square Enix retained the rights to the franchise.

This backstory sheds light on why DON'T NOD, despite creating the beloved original, is not part of the Amazon series. The rights to the IP remain with Square Enix, who is now partnering with other studios for the adaptation.

Fan Reactions and the Road Ahead

News of DON'T NOD's non-involvement has generated mixed reactions within the Life is Strange fanbase. Some fans express concern and skepticism, believing that the original developers' insight is crucial for a faithful adaptation. As one Reddit user commented, “When it comes to adapting story-driven games, someone from the developers should be involved in the process. If not as a writer, then at least as a consultant.” Others, however, are more optimistic, suggesting that Hollywood often relies on its own creative teams for adaptations and doesn't always consult original creators, with successful results.

The script for the Life is Strange adaptation is being handled by Charlie Covell, known for his work on series like The End of the F***ing World and Kaos. Details regarding the premiere date, episode count, and cast are yet to be announced. Fans, however, have already begun dream casting, with many hoping that Wednesday and Minecraft Movie star Emma Myers could portray Max Caulfield, an idea the actress herself has reportedly expressed interest in.

As the Life is Strange TV series moves forward, it faces the unique challenge of adapting a beloved, story-rich game without the direct involvement of its original creators. Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how this approach impacts the final product, balancing anticipation for a new take on a favorite story with cautious optimism about its authenticity.
