Funcom Addresses Dune: Awakening Player Feedback

Joel Bylos, Creative Director at Funcom, recently shared insights into the varied player reactions to their ambitious MMO survival game, Dune: Awakening. In an interview with Radio Times Gaming, Bylos openly admitted that player sentiment has been quite polarizing, stating, “Some players love it, some hate it.” He acknowledged that a segment of the audience is thrilled with the game, while another is openly discontent and vocal about their feelings.

Despite this mixed reception, Funcom is reportedly pleased with the project's initial launch. Bylos confirmed that both sales and peak concurrent player numbers at release exceeded the studio's expectations. He highlighted that dedicated fans are already spending hundreds of hours in the game, a strong indicator of its core appeal.

However, the game has seen a natural decline in player numbers since its launch. While peak concurrent users nearly reached 190,000 at the start, the average number of active players on Steam currently hovers around 20,000. Bylos commented that such a drop is common during the summer months, but the team remains committed to attracting new players and bringing back those who have already ventured into Arrakis. He expressed confidence that many potential players who might enjoy the game simply haven't tried it yet.

Upcoming Update 1.2.0.0 Aims to Revitalize the Game

Funcom is betting on a significant upcoming patch, update 1.2.0.0, to address player feedback and re-energize the community. The developers are promising not only a continuation of the game's story but also a wealth of additional improvements. These include reworked systems and various smaller quality-of-life additions – notably, Bylos even mentioned the ability to 'pet donkeys' as one of the new details. The studio hopes this substantial update will breathe new life into the project and serve as an ideal entry point for both new adventurers and returning veterans.

Dune: Awakening is currently available for PC players via Steam, where they can explore the vast, dangerous landscapes of Arrakis. The MMO survival title is also slated for release on consoles next year, promising to expand its reach. With ongoing development and planned content updates, Funcom is working to build a thriving and engaged community within the iconic Dune universe.
