More Dragon Quest Remakes on the Horizon?
Fans of the beloved Dragon Quest series have reason to be excited, as franchise creator Yuji Horii has hinted that the recently announced remake of Dragon Quest VII might not be the last classic installment to receive a modern overhaul. This news comes amidst a flurry of activity for the long-running RPG series, with multiple remakes and a brand-new title currently in various stages of development.
During a live broadcast of his radio show, Horii was asked by former Shonen Jump editor Kazuhiko Torishima why Square Enix chose to remake Dragon Quest VII specifically, rather than other popular entries like IV, V, or VI. Horii's response offered a telling clue about the future of the franchise. He explained that “various projects are in development, and it just so happened that the production of the seventh part's remake finished earlier than others.” This statement strongly suggests that fans should anticipate more remake announcements in the future, though Horii did not elaborate on any specific titles or details.
This isn't the first time Square Enix has revisited earlier Dragon Quest games with a fresh coat of paint. The company initially unveiled an HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III, which serves as the chronological beginning of the classic “Erdrick Trilogy.” This was later followed by the announcement of a combined HD-2D remake for Dragon Quest I and II. Most recently, the debut trailer for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined captivated audiences. Beyond the remakes, a completely new mainline entry, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, is also in production, though its release timeline remains unknown.
While waiting for the twelfth numbered installment, fans can look forward to diving into these upcoming remakes. The Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is scheduled to launch on October 30, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Following that, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will arrive on February 5, 2026, on the same platforms.
Horii's remarks provide an encouraging glimpse into Square Enix's long-term strategy for the Dragon Quest franchise. It appears the publisher is committed to both introducing new stories and preserving the legacy of its classic titles, ensuring that both long-time fans and new players will have plenty of adventures to embark on in the years to come.
