Valor Mortis, New Soulslike From Ghostrunner Devs, Shows 30+ Minutes of Gameplay

One More Level Reveals Extensive Valor Mortis Gameplay at gamescom 2025

The team behind the critically acclaimed Ghostrunner series, One More Level, is venturing into new territory, flexing its expertise in brutal first-person action with the upcoming soulslike title, Valor Mortis. At gamescom 2025, journalists from IGN were treated to an extensive look, showcasing over 30 minutes of raw gameplay from the highly anticipated game.

Valor Mortis plunges players into a grim and decaying world, setting the stage with a fittingly dark premise: "You served Napoleon. You died for Napoleon. You rose for Napoleon." Players take on the role of William, a former soldier of Napoleon's legendary Grande Armée, who finds himself resurrected after falling on the battlefield. However, the Europe he returns to is far from the one he sacrificed his life for. The continent is ravaged by a mysterious plague, and William himself discovers that his revival has imbued him with a dark, supernatural power.

True to the soulslike genre, combat in Valor Mortis promises to be challenging and rewarding. Players will master a diverse arsenal of weapons alongside supernatural abilities, utilizing quick dashes, precise parries, and brutal finishers to overcome formidable foes. Beyond the intense combat, the developers are also promising an enthralling narrative that masterfully weaves together real historical elements with horror and dark fantasy, creating a truly unique and unsettling atmosphere.

Valor Mortis is slated for release in 2026 and will be available on PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. For PC players eager to get an early taste of the action, a playtest is scheduled for late September, with sign-ups currently open on Steam.

With their proven track record in crafting high-octane, challenging experiences like Ghostrunner, One More Level is poised to deliver a compelling new take on the soulslike genre. The extended gameplay reveal at gamescom 2025 offers a thrilling glimpse into a dark, historically-inspired world where players will need all their skill and newfound power to survive.
