Borderlands 4's Technology Finally Matches Ambition, Promises Seamless World
Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford shared exciting details about the upcoming Borderlands 4 during an interview with GamesRadar+ at gamescom 2025. According to Pitchford, Borderlands 4 is the first game in the beloved looter-shooter series where the underlying technology has finally caught up with the developers' grand creative ambitions, leading to a truly open and seamless experience.
Pitchford explained that previous installments often necessitated 'stitching together' locations with narrow corridors and frequent loading screens, a limitation imposed by the hardware of the time. However, this will no longer be the case for Borderlands 4.
"In Borderlands 4, everything has become seamless. Loading screens are gone, and the world is now much wider and more open than ever before," Pitchford stated.
This technological leap has opened the door for exciting new gameplay mechanics and player freedom. One example Pitchford playfully highlighted is the implementation of a double jump. "We can do a double jump. What does that even mean? What laws of physics allow you to jump, and then jump again in mid-air? It makes absolutely no logical sense. But in a video game, it's incredibly fun," he quipped, embracing the series' signature blend of realism and absurdity.
Vehicle traversal has also seen significant improvements. Players will no longer need to seek out specific stations to summon their ride; personal vehicles can now be called upon instantly, allowing for unrestricted movement across the expansive, open world without any interruptions for loading.
Pitchford believes that Borderlands has always walked a fine line between the grounded and the absurd. In the fourth installment, this core identity is set to be amplified, thanks to these new technologies and fresh gameplay mechanics, promising an even more dynamic and engaging adventure for players.
Release Information and Player Impact
Borderlands 4 is set to launch on PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 on September 12, 2025. A version for the Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to follow on October 3, 2025. The game will also include text localization for various languages, including Russian, ensuring a broad global reach.
For players, these advancements mean a more immersive and less interrupted experience. The elimination of loading screens and the ability to traverse a truly open world freely, combined with enhanced movement options like the double jump and instant vehicle summoning, promise a Borderlands adventure that feels bigger, bolder, and more fluid than anything seen before in the franchise. Fans can look forward to diving into Pandora's latest iteration with unprecedented freedom and fun.
