Pixelated Chaos Awaits: NetherWorld Arrives September 12

Publisher SelectaPlay and developer Hungry Pixel have officially announced that their unique pixelated action-adventure, NetherWorld, will launch on September 12, 2025. This side-scrolling title promises a bizarre and darkly humorous journey unlike any other, as revealed during a trailer featured at the Future Games Show during Gamescom.

A Marital Crisis Like No Other

At the heart of NetherWorld is Medu, a strange jellyfish protagonist grappling with a severe marital crisis. As described in the game's Steam listing, Medu attempts to navigate this personal breakdown through a chaotic mix of alcohol, drugs, sex, fights, and encounters with a host of eccentric characters. What begins as a domestic struggle quickly devolves into an absurd and murky adventure filled with madcap personalities and pitch-black humor.

Gameplay and Features

Players can expect a riotous plot with roguelike elements, ensuring each playthrough offers fresh challenges. NetherWorld will also feature a variety of 'dirty' mini-games, where players can risk both their money and reputation. The adventure takes Medu through unconventional dungeons, including those involving a character known as Tik Jo.

Combat in NetherWorld offers a diverse range of weapons for players to discover and utilize. However, for those who prefer a more direct approach, the option to swing Medu's bare tentacles is always on the table during tense boss battles.

Art Style and Underlying Themes

Visually, NetherWorld combines a stylish pixel art aesthetic with an intentionally grotesque presentation. Beneath the layers of grime, alcohol, and madness, the game delves into more serious and relatable themes, exploring feelings of loneliness, failure, and the difficult process of trying to piece oneself back together after a breakdown.

NetherWorld will be available on PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch. A demo version is currently accessible on Steam for players eager to get a taste of Medu's bizarre world. Nintendo Switch owners can also pre-order a physical edition of the game.
