Classic Amiga Shooter Apidya Gets a Modern Makeover as Apidya' Special
Fans of classic shoot 'em ups have reason to rejoice: ININ Games has officially announced Apidya' Special, a 24-bit pixel remake of the beloved side-scrolling shooter, Apidya. Originally released on the Amiga in 1992, this iconic title is set to return to PC and consoles in 2026, promising a faithful yet enhanced experience.
Peter Thierolf, the original creator of Apidya, expressed his surprise and excitement about the project. "We never thought we'd get back to the game," Thierolf admitted. "But thanks to new technology, the right team, and community support, we can finally create the version we always dreamed of."
Handcrafted Pixels and Enhanced Sound
Apidya' Special is being built from the ground up, ensuring no emulation or upscaling is used. Instead, the developers are focusing on meticulously hand-drawn pixels, new art assets, and completely revamped sound effects. The development team includes members of the original crew, along with a dedicated fan who has joined as a full-fledged developer.
Players will have the flexibility to switch between a modern widescreen mode, complete with parallax effects, and a classic 4:3 display that aims to perfectly recreate the feel of the 1992 original. For purists and retro enthusiasts, optional CRT filters will be available, offering scan lines, 'phosphor glow,' and shadow mask effects to further enhance the nostalgic experience.
The soundtrack is also receiving significant attention. Legendary composer Chris Hülsbeck has prepared exclusive, re-orchestrated tracks, some of which have never been publicly released before, adding a fresh layer of auditory delight to the game.
New Features and Gameplay
Apidya' Special will feature five distinct worlds: the Meadow, the Pond, the Sewer, Cyberspace, and the Hive. Each world will contain up to five levels, promising a substantial amount of content. Players can look forward to battling twenty unique bosses, discovering secret areas, and encountering random events such as a 'night mode' with new enemy types.
A notable addition is the new cooperative mode, allowing a second player to control one of the game's helpful drone companions. To ensure accessibility for all, difficulty settings will cater to newcomers, while veterans can still challenge themselves with the classic level of intensity. Players will be able to embody the coolest bee in the clearing on PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch when the game launches in 2026.
