Microsoft's Multiplatform Strategy Pays Off on PlayStation
Microsoft's decision to bring its games to rival platforms, a move that initially upset some Xbox fans, appears to be yielding significant results. According to Mat Piscatella, CEO of the research firm Circana, titles published by Microsoft dominated the PlayStation sales charts during the second quarter of 2025.
Piscatella revealed that six of the top ten best-selling games on PlayStation between April and July 2025 were from Microsoft-owned studios. This data includes both digital and physical sales for Sony's consoles. Leading the pack was Forza Horizon 5, which secured the number one spot. Another analytics firm noted that the racing game has already sold over 3 million copies on PS5 in under three months.
Other prominent Microsoft titles appearing in the top 10 include The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and DOOM: The Dark Ages, highlighting the success of bringing major first-party franchises to a broader audience.
Commenting on the surprising shift, Piscatella expressed his amazement at the current state of the console market. "The console market is crazy. I wish I could show this list to someone in 2015," he remarked, emphasizing how much the industry landscape has transformed in recent years.
A Changing Landscape: What This Means for Players
This sales data underscores a significant evolution in the video game industry, where traditional console exclusivity lines are blurring. Microsoft's push to expand the reach of its games beyond Xbox hardware is clearly finding a receptive audience on PlayStation. The trend is set to continue, with more Microsoft titles rumored or confirmed for PlayStation. Hellblade II is confirmed to launch on PS5 on August 12. Unconfirmed reports also suggest that Gears of War: E-Day and State of Decay 3 could eventually make their way to Sony's consoles. Conversely, Sony is also embracing multiplatform releases, with the popular shooter Helldivers 2 confirmed for an Xbox Series launch on August 26, though developers have indicated it won't be joining Game Pass for now.
