Directive 8020 Launch Pushed to Early 2026 After Supermassive Games Layoffs
Fans eagerly awaiting Directive 8020, the upcoming cinematic sci-fi horror game from Supermassive Games, the acclaimed developers behind Until Dawn, will have to wait a bit longer. The game, originally slated for an October 2, 2024 release, has now been officially delayed to the first half of 2026.
Layoffs Cited as Reason for Postponement
The primary reason for this significant delay is a recent round of layoffs at the studio, which has impacted 36 employees. Supermassive Games, like many other developers in the current climate, cited the challenging state of the industry as the reason for these difficult decisions. In a statement, the studio explained:
“The gaming industry remains a complex and ever-changing environment. As we adapt our team structure to these changes, we had to make a very difficult decision to begin a redundancy process, in which we will lose up to 36 employees. This decision was not easy for us, and we know that it will be an incredibly difficult time for everyone. Our absolute priority is to provide comprehensive support to all affected.
We remain focused on our future projects. In this regard, we have decided to postpone the release of Directive 8020 to the first half of 2026. The game has already received fantastic feedback, and this additional time will help us deliver the best possible experience to our fans. We are immensely grateful to our community for their patience and support.”
Despite these internal changes, the development timeline for Little Nightmares III remains unaffected. Directive 8020 is in development for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. While the delay is disappointing for players, the additional development time aims to ensure Supermassive Games can deliver the high-quality, immersive horror experience their fans expect.
