Resident Evil Requiem Adds Third-Person Option Due to Player Feedback on Resident Evil 7's Fear Factor
Capcom's upcoming title, Resident Evil Requiem, is set to offer players a choice between first-person and third-person camera perspectives. This decision comes after the development team, led by director Koji Nakanishi, recognized that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was perhaps too terrifying for some players, preventing them from fully experiencing or even starting the game.
Back with Resident Evil 7, the series made a significant shift, moving from the traditional over-the-shoulder third-person view to a more immersive first-person perspective. While this change successfully amplified the horror and drew players deeper into the terrifying world, it appears it was a double-edged sword for some segments of the audience.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Koji Nakanishi, who was also the game director for Resident Evil 7, explained the reasoning behind the new camera option for Requiem. "The first-person view truly immerses you in the experience and, consequently, makes the player feel more scared," Nakanishi stated. "However, we might have pushed things a little too far with Resident Evil 7."
Nakanishi elaborated that he now understands that for some, the intensity of the first-person view was simply too much. "I believe some players found it unbearable: some couldn't finish the game, and others didn't even dare to begin," he reflected. "Looking back, I want people to enjoy the game. So, if the first-person mode feels too stressful for you, you can switch to third-person view."
The inclusion of a third-person camera is intended to provide a slight buffer from the immediate horror. As Nakanishi noted, seeing your character on screen can offer a sense of detachment, making the horrifying situations more manageable. This means players can tailor their experience, choosing the level of immersion and fright that suits them best.
Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, and will be available on PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. This added flexibility in camera perspective aims to make the game more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience, ensuring that no one misses out on the next chapter of terror due to its intensity.
