Star Wars Outlaws Sequel Reportedly Canceled by Ubisoft
Ubisoft has reportedly decided against developing a sequel to Star Wars Outlaws. According to insider Tom Henderson, speaking on the Insider Gaming podcast, plans for Outlaws 2 were in an "extremely early stage" but have now been scrapped due to the first game's underwhelming performance.
The news follows comments from Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, who acknowledged in a recent company report that Star Wars Outlaws did not meet their sales expectations. Had the game performed better, a sequel would have likely been considered, but that potential has now been dismissed.
Disappointing Reception and Sales
Star Wars Outlaws received a Metacritic score of 75 from critics, while its user rating on Steam stands at just 73%. Common complaints among players and reviewers included a dull story, frustrating stealth segments, poor optimization, and an empty open world. Ubisoft, however, has attributed the game's struggles to a supposed decrease in interest in the Star Wars universe as a whole.
Released on PC (via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Connect), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series, Star Wars Outlaws has received several post-launch updates and two story DLCs: Wild Card and A Pirate's Fortune. Despite these additions, the game seemingly failed to capture a strong enough audience to warrant further development in the series.
What This Means for Players
The reported cancellation of a sequel for Star Wars Outlaws suggests that Ubisoft is moving on from this particular iteration of the franchise. For players who enjoyed the first game, this means no new adventures with Kay Vess and Nix are currently planned. For those who were critical of the game, it might be seen as a sign that Ubisoft is re-evaluating its approach to future Star Wars titles, or simply prioritizing projects with stronger initial performance. It highlights the importance of critical reception and sales figures in shaping the future of new game IPs, even those based on major franchises.
