Nintendo Responds to Generative AI Lobbying Rumors
Nintendo has issued an official statement, directly refuting recent internet discussions suggesting the company is actively lobbying against the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) within Japan.
These rumors began circulating after a post from Satoshi Asano, a member of Japan's House of Representatives. Asano claimed on social media that Nintendo was “avoiding generative AI to protect its intellectual property” and “negotiating with the government” on the matter.
Nintendo quickly responded, releasing a public denial to clarify its position:
“Contrary to recent discussions on the internet, Nintendo has not had any contact with the Japanese government about generative AI. Whether generative AI is involved or not, we will continue to take necessary actions against infringement of our intellectual property rights.”

Following Nintendo's swift and clear response, Asano removed his original post and issued an apology, acknowledging that he “did not verify the information properly.”
This isn't the first time Nintendo has addressed the topic of AI. Earlier this year, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser spoke with CNBC, stating that the company evaluates all technologies, including AI, based on their potential to benefit players. Bowser emphasized that Nintendo's primary goal is to ensure that any technology used, whether in game development or within their hardware, enhances the overall player experience.
The integration of generative AI continues to be a hot topic in the gaming world. A survey by the Game Developers Conference (GDC) revealed that while nearly half of developers are already using these tools, a significant 84% express concerns about the potential consequences of their widespread adoption.
Nintendo's firm denial underscores its commitment to protecting its intellectual property, regardless of the tools or technologies involved. This clarification reassures fans and developers that the company’s focus remains on creating enjoyable gaming experiences while safeguarding its extensive catalog of beloved franchises.
