Yakuza Kiwami 3 Confirmed with New Story Content
As promised, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio hosted their annual RGG Summit this morning, bringing with it a wave of exciting announcements for the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise. Headlining the presentation was the long-rumored reveal of Yakuza Kiwami 3, a complete remake of the classic Yakuza 3.
This full remake isn't just about a visual upgrade and improved gameplay mechanics. It also boasts a significant amount of new story content. Developers have crafted a brand-new narrative chapter titled 'Dark Ties,' which delves into the backstory of Yoshitaka Mine, the primary antagonist of the original Yakuza 3. Mine's tale explores his journey from leading a successful company to losing everything and willingly immersing himself in the criminal underworld of the Yakuza.
For protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, his journey remains as fans remember it. After the events of Yakuza 2, Kiryu decided to leave his criminal past behind, dedicating himself to running an orphanage in Okinawa alongside his adopted daughter, Haruka. However, these peaceful days by the beach are shattered when a fierce struggle over the orphanage's land forces Kiryu to once again take up his fists to protect those he cares for.
Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties is slated for release on February 11 next year, coming to PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2. The remake will feature Russian text localization and a full English dub. System requirements for PC are not yet known.
Yakuza 0 Director's Cut Arrives on More Platforms
Beyond the major Kiwami 3 reveal, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio also made a couple of other key announcements.
First, they revealed the release date for new versions of Yakuza 0 Director's Cut. This expanded edition of Yakuza 0 initially launched in June, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2. Now, the developers are bringing the game to PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with these ports set to release on December 8.
This expanded edition includes Russian subtitles, an English dub, several additional cutscenes, and an online cooperative mode called 'Red Light Raid' for four players, featuring 60 unlockable characters. The developers clarified that the new co-op mode will arrive a short time after launch via a dedicated update. Unfortunately for existing fans, owners of the original Yakuza 0 will not be able to upgrade to this new version and will need to purchase it separately.
Yakuza Kiwami and Kiwami 2 Get Next-Gen Versions
The final announcement concerned dedicated versions of Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
These re-releases will also be available on December 8. PC players haven't been forgotten either; on December 9, both Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 on PC will receive special updates that include several additional localizations, with Russian among them.
These announcements signify a significant commitment from RGG Studio to expand the reach and enhance the experience of the beloved Yakuza series for a global audience. Fans have a lot to look forward to, whether it's revisiting Kiryu's past with a fresh coat of paint or diving into new content with friends.
