Ron Gilbert Wants to Innovate Adventure Games with 3D Exploration

Legendary game designer Ron Gilbert, the creative mind behind classics like The Secret of Monkey Island, has shared his ongoing passion for adventure games and his vision for their future. In a recent interview with YouTube channel Cressup, Gilbert revealed that while he is currently working on the roguelike title Death By Scrolling, ideas for a fresh adventure game concept are constantly on his mind.

Gilbert made it clear that he isn't interested in simply rehashing old formulas for the sake of nostalgia. "If I'm going to make another adventure game, I want it to be interesting, unique, and different from standard point-and-click," he stated. He acknowledged that his more recent projects, such as Thimbleweed Park and Return to Monkey Island, leaned heavily on nostalgic elements, and he is now eager to explore something entirely new and innovative.

One intriguing idea Gilbert is considering is an adventure game set in a fully 3D world. This approach would allow players to explore their surroundings in ways fundamentally different from traditional two-dimensional projects. While he emphasized that this is merely an idea and no concrete plans are in place, it's a concept he frequently revisits when contemplating the evolution of the genre.

For now, Gilbert’s primary focus remains on Death By Scrolling. However, fans of adventure games can rest assured that his love for the genre is unwavering. It's clear that once the right, groundbreaking concept takes shape, Ron Gilbert will undoubtedly return to craft another memorable and unique adventure experience for players worldwide.
