A New Name and Perspective for a Promising Detective RPG
When a significant number of developers departed ZA/UM, the acclaimed studio behind the beloved RPG Disco Elysium, several spiritual successors to their unique style were announced in time. One such title, initially introduced as XXX Nightshift, has now undergone a significant transformation, not only changing its name to Tangerine Antarctic but also shifting its camera perspective from isometric to a third-person view.
The game is being developed by Dark Math Games, a new studio comprising approximately twenty individuals who previously worked on Disco Elysium. The team had originally described their creation as a deep single-player detective RPG, promising a wealth of tools and gameplay layers for players to explore.
Delving into the Changes
Today, Dark Math Games confirmed the renaming and detailed how it aligns with a slight repositioning of the game. The most notable change, beyond the title, is the move away from an isometric camera, which will now be replaced by a third-person perspective. The developers have not yet specified the reasons behind this significant camera alteration.
However, studio founder Timo Albert shed light on the new name, offering a glimpse into the game's setting and narrative heart:
“The game takes place at the 'World's End' ski resort on Mount Hope in British Antarctica. 'Tangerine Antarctic' is the name of an in-game hotel, designed by the famous Estonian architect Kaur Stoor, where most of the game's events unfold. This is where you'll find yourself stranded due to a snowstorm, forced to investigate mysterious murders. And 'Tangerine Antarctic' itself is one of the important characters in this detective RPG.”
This description paints a picture of an isolated, atmospheric mystery where the environment plays a crucial role. The idea of the hotel itself being a 'character' suggests a deep integration of the setting into the storytelling, reminiscent of classic whodunits.
What This Means for Players
While Tangerine Antarctic still does not have an official release date, new screenshots reflecting the third-person perspective have appeared on its Steam page. This change in perspective, combined with the new name, could signify Dark Math Games' intent to forge its own identity, potentially distancing itself from direct visual comparisons to Disco Elysium while retaining the narrative depth and detective focus that fans of the former studio's work cherish. Players can likely anticipate a unique blend of mystery, strong storytelling, and a fresh visual approach in this upcoming title.
