Destiny 2: Renegades Expansion Embraces Star Wars Style, New Content Update Arrives

Bungie recently held a live broadcast to pull back the curtain on its latest additions to Destiny 2: the upcoming Renegades expansion and the first major update of the 'Prophecy Year,' titled Ashes and Iron.

The Ashes and Iron Update: What's Live Now

The 'Ashes and Iron' update is already available for players within 'Destiny 2: Edge of Fate.' This significant patch introduces a host of new activities and improvements designed to keep Guardians engaged. Players can now dive into fresh missions, enjoy enhancements to the Portal system, discover new loot, progress through a brand-new season pass, and wield an exciting new exotic weapon.

  • New Three-Player Mission: 'Return'
Guardians are called to revisit the Plaguelands to reclaim what was lost. This story-driven mission offers objectives across four distinct locations, challenging players to achieve goals within a time limit to earn valuable rewards.
  • Portal System Overhaul
The Portal has been updated with fresh gear, modifiers, and missions. The 'Superpowered Operations' section now includes dungeon lairs, letting players test their skills against specific encounters from Destiny 2's dungeons. Additionally, two new exotic missions, 'Harbinger' and '//node.control.AVALON//', have been added.
  • Expanded Fireteam Operations
Beyond the 'Return' mission, this category now features various other activities, including a pair of new Battlegrounds, three Strikes, and new missions from the 'Offensive' series. Furthermore, three new paths in the Vault of the Elders will become available next week.
  • Epic 'Sands of Infinity' Raid Race
This epic version of 'Sands of Infinity' brings new challenges, rewards, and objectives. In the first 48 hours after its launch, Bungie will host a 'World's First' race and activate Contest Mode, pushing top teams to their limits. The 'World's First' race for the epic 'Sands of Infinity' raid is set to begin on September 27.
  • Featured Gear Update
Starting with the 'Renegades' expansion, all exotic weapons and armor will be considered 'featured gear.' This means they will consistently receive the benefits and bonuses of new gear, ensuring their continued relevance.
  • Upcoming Exotic Mission
On October 7, Guardians will embark on a new exotic mission to infiltrate a military satellite. Players will delve deep into the Plaguelands to uncover the Conductor's plans and earn a brand-new exotic weapon.

Introducing Destiny 2: Renegades – A Star Wars-Inspired Epic

The 'Renegades' expansion, launching on December 2, draws heavy inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe. It aims to blend Destiny's unique narrative and gameplay with themes and elements borrowed from the iconic sci-fi saga.

Players will be thrust into the Solar System's criminal underworld, where they must challenge the Barant Imperium alongside a team of unlikely adventurers. The mission is to rescue the Drifter, who is haunted by his past, and thwart an organization that is creating deadly weapons. The Drifter believes the Imperium has a connection to the mysterious Nine.

Bungie confirmed that 'Renegades' was developed in collaboration with LucasFilm Games, known for its extensive work on various Star Wars titles. The core goal of this partnership is to craft a unique Destiny story about taking significant risks for a better future.

A key feature of 'Renegades' is the new game mode, 'Lawless Frontier.' In this mode, players can unlock unique, upgradeable renegade abilities, acquire new weapons and gear, and build their reputation among shady syndicates through a 'notoriety' system to expand their arsenal. Missions within this mode include smuggling, bounty hunting, and sabotage, which can be undertaken solo or with allies.

The expansion spans three planets and introduces six new maps, each inspired by iconic Star Wars locations. For instance, the new hub area, Farside Outpost, evokes the classic feel of Mos Eisley from Tatooine.

To further immerse players in the Star Wars-esque theme, 'Renegades' introduces a new weapon archetype: the Blaster. Additionally, players will discover Praxis Blades, which bear a striking resemblance to the lightsabers from Star Wars.

The 'Destiny 2: Renegades' expansion will be available on December 2 for $40. Pre-ordering the expansion will grant players an exclusive exotic ship and a legendary emblem.

What This Means for Guardians

These new additions promise a rich period for Destiny 2 players. The 'Ashes and Iron' update provides immediate content, enhancing existing systems and offering fresh challenges. Meanwhile, the 'Renegades' expansion looks set to deliver a compelling, narrative-driven experience with a unique flavor, thanks to its Star Wars inspiration and new gameplay mechanics. Players can look forward to a blend of familiar Destiny action with exciting new adventures, gear, and lore to uncover in the coming months.
