Commandos: Origins Arrives on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One
Fans of classic stealth-tactics games have new reason to celebrate as Kalypso Media and Claymore Game have announced that Commandos: Origins is now available on last-generation consoles, specifically Xbox One and PlayStation 4. This release broadens the game's availability following its initial launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S earlier in April.
Set during World War II, Commandos: Origins places players in command of an elite special forces unit. The game sends this squad across a variety of environments, from the icy plains of the Arctic to the scorching African deserts. Players will lead six distinct heroes, each bringing their own unique skills and backstory to the challenging missions.
The game features over a dozen missions that can be tackled in multiple ways. Players can choose to go it alone in single-player mode or team up with a friend for two-player co-op, either online or via local split-screen. Developers claim that the open-ended nature of mission design encourages diverse approaches and replayability.
Despite the excitement for the return of the beloved Commandos series, Origins received a somewhat mixed reception upon its initial launch. Reviewers, including our own Daur Avidza, expressed disappointment. Avidza noted that, as a long-time fan of the series, the game didn't quite live up to expectations, describing it as largely unremarkable. He highlighted that while he didn't expect it to surpass the complexity of the second installment, he had hoped for a solid entry that captured the essence of the original Commandos. The only notable innovation for him was a sniper capable of taking out two enemies with a single bullet. Throughout his playthrough, he found himself continuously let down, feeling the game consistently failed to deliver truly outstanding or positive moments.
What This Means for Players
With its arrival on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, more players now have the chance to experience Commandos: Origins. While initial reviews suggest a cautious approach for long-time fans of the series, the game still offers a tactical stealth experience set in a classic World War II backdrop. The added accessibility for last-gen console owners means a wider audience can now delve into the strategic challenges and cooperative gameplay that Commandos: Origins aims to provide, allowing them to form their own opinions on this new chapter in the iconic franchise.
