Helldivers 2 Sees Strong Xbox Launch, Outselling PS5's Initial Debut
In an interesting turn of events, the popular co-op shooter Helldivers 2 reportedly sold more copies on Xbox Series X|S during its first six days than it did on PlayStation 5 during its original launch period. According to data provided by the analytics firm Alinea Insight, the game added an impressive 926,000 units to its sales total on Xbox Series X|S within the first six days of its release on the platform.
This figure stands in stark contrast to the PlayStation 5's initial sales. When Helldivers 2 first launched on PS5, it sold approximately 633,000 units within the same six-day window. This means the Xbox launch sales were nearly one and a half times higher than those on PS5 at its debut.
However, it's crucial to consider the different circumstances surrounding each launch. Helldivers 2 has been available on the market for over a year now, first releasing on PlayStation 5 and PC. Over this period, the game has not only proven its popularity but also grown significantly with a substantial amount of content updates and improvements. Furthermore, the game's initial launch on PS5 was plagued by widespread connection issues and bugs, which undoubtedly affected its early sales performance. Developer Arrowhead Game Studios has since worked diligently to address and resolve most of these technical problems.
Despite this strong performance on Xbox, Helldivers 2 did not manage to break into the top ten downloaded games for August on the platform. Alinea Insight's data indicates that the tenth spot was held by Gears of War: Reloaded, which launched on the same day as Helldivers 2 on Xbox and saw 1.3 million downloads, including those through Game Pass. The top three spots for August downloads were claimed by PEAK with 4 million downloads, followed by the shooter Delta Force with 3.7 million, and Grounded 2 at third with 2.2 million downloads.
This data highlights a significant demand for Helldivers 2 among Xbox players, even with its much later release on the platform. While the game's established reputation and improved stability likely contributed to its robust Xbox debut, it nonetheless showcases the enduring appeal of the Galactic War across different gaming communities. For players, this strong showing likely means a healthy and active player base on Xbox, ensuring plenty of fellow Helldivers to spread Managed Democracy with.
