LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Blends Arkham Combat with Classic LEGO Fun
At gamescom 2025, TT Games unveiled LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, an announcement that quickly became one of the most talked-about reveals of the show. While many associate LEGO games with lighthearted, family-friendly fun, this new project showcases TT Games' ambition to create a full-fledged open-world action experience, drawing significant inspiration from Rocksteady's critically acclaimed Arkham series.
Jonathan Smith, Strategic Director at TT Games, shared insights with GamesRadar+, explaining the team's goal to capture the essence of what made the Arkham series legendary within their LEGO Batman game. “When we think about how to bring Batman to life in a video game today, of course, we’re inspired by the work of our friends and colleagues at Rocksteady Studios, who so brilliantly created the Arkham series that defined a generation,” Smith stated.
Smith elaborated on the specific elements borrowed from the Arkham games: “As a starting point, they [the Arkham series creators] created the sense of being surrounded by enemies, made fluid combos, hit counters, and takedowns. We wanted that to be present in our game.” However, Traveller’s Tales isn't just copying Arkham beat-for-beat. This isn't a grim, dark narrative in the style of Rocksteady Studios' work; it’s still a humorous LEGO game. The developers have ensured their signature style and accessibility for younger audiences remain a core part of the experience.
Special attention is being paid to gadgets. The trailer revealed explosive gel, a familiar tool from Arkham, and Batarangs. Each of the seven main playable characters will feature their own unique devices. Co-op play also remains a key priority for TT Games, ensuring players can team up for their adventures.
Legacy of the Dark Knight marks Traveller’s Tales' first LEGO game since the release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in 2022. The Skywalker Saga was a breakthrough for the series, transforming traditional “family beat-’em-ups” into more expansive third-person action games with enhanced capabilities. Smith highlighted that this technical progress forms the foundation for their new Batman title: “We’re looking at Batman with everything we’ve done before, everything we achieved in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.”
Developers are promising a more expansive and immersive Gotham than ever before in previous LEGO games. While open worlds, including Gotham, have appeared in LEGO titles before, this iteration of the city is set to be far more detailed and alive. According to Smith, the scale of Legacy of the Dark Knight surpasses all of the studio's previous projects.
Industry analyst Christopher Dring noted that Legacy of the Dark Knight was the biggest announcement at gamescom 2025. The project has already been added to over 400,000 Steam wishlists, exceeding all other participants at the expo. Despite a relatively small number of playable characters, the game is already impressing with its scale, open world, and the promise of a balanced blend of Arkham-inspired combat with signature LEGO humor and style.
Players will be able to don the Batsuit, hop into the Batmobile, and embark on Bat-adventures in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Steam page currently indicates English localization only.
