Leonard Boyarsky to Expand His Own Universe in The Outer Worlds 2
Obsidian Entertainment has long been celebrated for its deep role-playing games, a legacy forged by industry veterans, including some who worked on the original 1997 Fallout. Now, even after three decades in the gaming world, Leonard Boyarsky, the Creative Director behind the upcoming The Outer Worlds 2, is embarking on a significant first in his career.
The Outer Worlds 2 will be Boyarsky’s first full-fledged sequel to a game universe he personally helped create from the ground up. This marks a unique moment for the acclaimed designer.
During a recent interview with GamesRadar+ at gamescom 2025, Boyarsky reflected on his past, recalling that when he left Interplay, work on Fallout 2 was just beginning. “I wrote maybe one or two lines of dialogue for that game [Fallout 2], which I think Chris Avellone heavily rewrote,” Boyarsky explained. “But we weren't actually creating that game. So this is literally the first time I'm doing a sequel to a game for which I created the universe. And that's really cool.”
Boyarsky shared that the first The Outer Worlds was intentionally contained. The goal was to allow players to slowly immerse themselves in the new world and understand its unique identity. For the sequel, however, the team is ready to unleash the universe’s full potential.
“As we said about the first game, even if we had had more time and money, I still don't think we would have made it so massive, because we needed to stay focused,” Boyarsky elaborated. “It was like, this is the world, so gamers could enter it and really understand what this place is. But this time, we're fully expanding the project and really widening my concept that we started with in the first game. That's something I haven't had the opportunity to do before.”
Journalists recently had the chance to play a demo of The Outer Worlds 2, with many praising the increased scale, significantly improved graphics, and the expanded player choice within the game. The highly anticipated satirical RPG The Outer Worlds 2 is set to launch on October 29, 2025, for PC (via Steam and Battle.net), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. Players who pre-order The Outer Worlds 2 Premium Edition can begin their cosmic adventure five days earlier, starting October 24. Russian text localization will be included.
This means players can look forward to a much larger, more expansive experience in The Outer Worlds 2, with the unique vision of its original creator at the helm, promising a deeper dive into the richly satirical universe fans have come to love.
