PUBG: Battlegrounds Ending Support for PS4 and Xbox One Consoles

In a significant announcement, the developers behind the popular battle royale game, PUBG: Battlegrounds, have revealed that the game will no longer support PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles starting November 13. This move, described by the team as “with a heavy heart,” means players on last-generation hardware will need to upgrade to a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series console to continue playing.

The transition will take place following server maintenance on November 13. After this date, it will no longer be possible to download or access PUBG: Battlegrounds on PS4 or Xbox One. Importantly, player account data and purchase information will be preserved and can be seamlessly transferred to their new PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series console, ensuring no progress is lost.

According to the developers, this shift is essential for the game's continued evolution and to ensure it runs correctly on modern console hardware. By focusing solely on current-generation systems, the team aims to deliver a significantly improved gameplay experience for players. They cite several key benefits:

  • A more stable game environment and smoother gameplay in future updates.
  • Enhanced graphics and more consistent frame rates for console players.
  • A reduction in game crashes due to optimized memory management.

For players upgrading to current-gen consoles, PUBG: Battlegrounds will offer enhanced visual fidelity and performance targets:

  • PlayStation 5: 1440p resolution at a stable 60 frames per second.
  • PlayStation 5 Pro: 2160p (4K dynamic resolution) at 60 frames per second.
  • Xbox Series X: 2160p (4K dynamic resolution) at 60 frames per second.
  • Xbox Series S: Players can choose between 1080p at 60 frames per second or 1440p at 30 frames per second.

Upgrading is straightforward for most players. Xbox Series console owners will receive the updated version of PUBG: Battlegrounds via Smart Delivery, automatically downloading the correct version for their system. PlayStation 5 users will need to manually download the upgrade through the PlayStation Store. This strategic decision by the PUBG: Battlegrounds team highlights a growing trend in the industry as developers shift focus entirely to the capabilities of current-generation hardware, promising a more optimized and visually impressive experience for dedicated players.
