Former Black Panther Game Developers Join Wizards of the Coast for New Project
A significant portion of the development team from the recently canceled Marvel's Black Panther game, previously at Cliffhanger Games, has joined Wizards of the Coast. This news comes from GamesIndustry.biz, citing Wizards of the Coast President John Hight.
The group is led by veteran game industry creative director Michael de Plater. De Plater is well-known for his key role at Monolith Productions, where he served as design director for the critically acclaimed Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. His extensive experience also includes contributions to titles like Tom Clancy’s EndWar and Rome: Total War.
“We actually managed to get him and 14 key people that he worked with there — and many of them worked together at Monolith before that — to come create a new game for us,” John Hight stated.
The new game is currently in its very early stages, with de Plater and his team just beginning the concept phase. John Hight emphasized that the new team is working on “something fresh and super cool.” Wizards of the Coast leadership has committed to giving the developers ample time to explore as many ideas as possible, ensuring a thorough creative process.
Hight noted that Wizards of the Coast is adopting a similar patient approach with Giant Skull, another studio formed by Star Wars Jedi series director Stig Asmussen. Giant Skull's debut title is set to be based on the iconic Dungeons & Dragons franchise.
The move provides a fresh start for these talented developers after the unfortunate cancellation of the Black Panther project. For players, this means the expertise and creative vision of industry veterans like Michael de Plater will now contribute to a new, unannounced title under the Wizards of the Coast banner, promising an innovative experience in the future.
