Danganronpa Creator Kazutaka Kodaka Believes Live Service Games Need Proper Endings

Danganronpa Creator Advocates for Proper Endings in Live Service Games

Kazutaka Kodaka, the acclaimed creator behind the Danganronpa series, has spoken out about the lifecycle of live service games, urging developers to consider and plan for the eventual conclusion of their projects. He believes that most live service titles will inevitably shut down, and players deserve a clear, satisfying ending rather than an abrupt cancellation.

Kodaka’s statement comes with personal relevance, as his studio, Too Kyo Games, was involved in the creation of TRIBE NINE, a free-to-play action RPG developed by Akatsuki Games. The game has had a short run, operating for less than a year, and is set to cease operations on November 27th.

To ensure fans aren't left with an unfinished story, Kodaka has launched a non-commercial initiative called "Neoneon Tribe." This project aims to release free web comics and other materials to provide a complete narrative conclusion for TRIBE NINE. "This is a completely non-commercial fan project, but I’ve decided to tell the story of TRIBE NINE until the end," Kodaka explained. "I understand this might not be the ending everyone expected, but if I can create a truly compelling story, perhaps it can become the beginning of something new. I intend to make it just that."

He further added, "The materials will be published for free, so I hope you'll read them. I'm also carefully considering the best way to present them. I promise one thing: I will not let TRIBE NINE end in a way that makes your love for this game feel like a mistake or something to be ashamed of." Kodaka reflected on his past, noting it has been over 20 years since he worked on a creative project without payment. "But if I commit to this, I will give it my all," he stated, viewing the TRIBE NINE fan project as a personal hobby. He reassured fans that he would work on it during his free time or weekends, ensuring it would not impact his main professional responsibilities.

Given its non-commercial nature, Kodaka acknowledged that translations might be challenging and he might seek volunteer assistance in the future. He also subtly directed those wishing to offer financial support towards purchasing Hundred Line or its merchandise, a project from his main studio, Too Kyo Games, to indirectly support his team's work.

In an interview with Automaton, Kodaka emphasized that while developers cannot create games expecting failure, they must keep the possibility of closure in mind. For him, this foresight is a crucial aspect of responsibility towards the player base. To aid in crafting TRIBE NINE's conclusion, former game producer Shuhei Yamaguchi and scenario writer Katsunori Suginaka have joined the effort. Additionally, ChronoGate is developing a web platform designed to deliver the story's finale in a unique, "game-like" format.

Kodaka’s proactive approach offers a thoughtful solution to the common problem of live service game shutdowns, ensuring that even discontinued titles can leave players with a sense of closure and respect for the time and passion they invested.
