Battlefield 6 Matchmaking: Connection Comes First, Skill Second
Many gamers are wary of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) systems in online multiplayer games. While designed with good intentions to create balanced matches, SBMM can often lead to frustration among players, sometimes feeling like a 'red flag' for segments of the shooter community.
David Sirland, Lead Producer for Battlefield 6, recently shed light on how the game's matchmaking system will operate, aiming to address player concerns and provide clarity.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Sirland aimed to clear up any confusion and reassure Battlefield fans about Battlefield 6's approach to matchmaking. He explained:
"The open beta used all the matchmaker priorities we plan for release. These are the same as in previous games. We prioritize ping and wait time over most other factors. Skill is a factor, but it's not the primary one, and all our large modes require varying degrees of skill to function properly. In a sandbox environment, you need players with diverse skill sets, so the matchmaker also works to balance teams within this process to ensure fairness."
Sirland's statement emphasizes that connecting players quickly with a stable, low-ping connection is the top priority for Battlefield 6's matchmaking. While player skill will play a role, it will not be the primary determinant for finding a match. Instead, skill will be utilized to help balance teams once players are grouped, ensuring that matches remain competitive and fair across different skill levels within the large-scale game modes.
The first open beta phase for Battlefield 6 recently concluded, drawing in over 520,000 concurrent players on Steam. This makes it the most successful beta in the franchise's history, showcasing significant player interest ahead of launch. Players will get another chance to jump into the action soon, with a second beta test running from August 14th to August 17th.
Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10th for PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It's worth noting that Russian localization will not be available in the game.
This clarification from David Sirland should come as good news to players concerned about overly strict SBMM. By prioritizing connection quality and quick match entry, Battlefield 6 aims to provide a smoother, less frustrating experience for its player base, allowing for more diverse and enjoyable combat encounters without feeling constantly challenged by hyper-optimized skill-based lobbies.
