Battlefield 6 Developers Weigh In on Call of Duty Competition

As the open beta for Battlefield 6 draws significant player attention, comparisons with the long-standing Call of Duty franchise are inevitable. In a recent interview with Jake Lucky, the development team behind Battlefield 6 addressed these parallels, offering insights into how they view the competitive landscape.

A Unique Identity in the FPS Genre

Byron Beede, General Manager of Battlefield, and Vince Zampella, Vice President at Electronic Arts and CEO of Respawn Entertainment, both emphasized that the two iconic series have coexisted for many years and largely complement one another. Zampella highlighted that each game boasts unique characteristics. While Battlefield is renowned for its environmental destruction, robust class system, and massive battles, Call of Duty focuses on different gameplay elements that appeal to its own player base.

“Every game is a competitor to some extent,” Zampella added, “But Battlefield is unique and offers what no one else can give.” This statement underscores the developers’ confidence in Battlefield 6’s distinct gameplay experience, which aims to provide something different from its counterparts.

Interestingly, both Beede and Zampella bring significant experience from the Call of Duty franchise. Vince Zampella is a co-creator of the entire Call of Duty series, and Byron Beede previously contributed to titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone. Their shared history with both franchises offers a unique perspective on the long-standing rivalry.

Beyond the Beta: What to Expect

Beyond the discussion of competition, the developers also touched on other aspects of Battlefield 6, including community interaction, the class system, measures against cheaters, and even hinted at a future battle royale mode. These topics suggest a comprehensive vision for the game beyond its initial launch.

Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10 for PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It’s important to note that the game will not include Russian localization at launch. The second phase of the open beta is currently ongoing and is scheduled to conclude on August 18 at 11:00 MSK.

For players, this means that while Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty may appear to be direct competitors, the developers themselves see them as distinct experiences that cater to different preferences. Fans can look forward to Battlefield 6 offering its signature large-scale, destructive warfare, providing a unique alternative in the crowded first-person shooter market.
