Splitgate 2 Rolls Back to Beta, Devs Acknowledge Premature Launch
1047 Games, the studio behind the portal-filled arena shooter Splitgate 2, has announced a significant shift: the game is temporarily reverting to a beta state. In a statement shared on the project's official X (formerly Twitter) page, the development team openly admitted that they rushed the release, made mistakes, and failed to deliver the level of quality players deserved.
The studio plans to take a pause until early next year to thoroughly overhaul key elements of the game. Their plans include a complete redesign of the progression system, adding new portals to maps, simplifying monetization, bringing back classic modes, and improving overall community engagement. The developers have committed to conducting more frequent playtests and surveys to better listen to player feedback and make Splitgate 2 a truly “community-oriented” project.
We heard your criticism — and we agree with it. We launched the game too early. We had ambitious plans, and in our eagerness to share them with you, we bit off more than we could chew. — Ian Prou and Nick Bagamian, Co-Founders of 1047 Games
Tough Decisions for a Brighter Future
To reallocate resources and focus fully on the sequel, 1047 Games has made the difficult decision to reduce some roles within the team. Additionally, they will soon close the servers for the original Splitgate. This move, though painful, is intended to preserve as many employees as possible and ensure all efforts are concentrated on making Splitgate 2 the best game it can be. The co-founders noted that maintaining the original game's servers had cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars in recent years, a cost they can no longer bear while rebuilding the sequel.
Despite these changes, Splitgate 2 will remain accessible. The team is also still preparing “Chapter 3” with priority fixes and important updates. The co-founders reiterated their dedication: “This game is our life, and we don’t want any other path. There’s a lot of work ahead, but we’re not giving up.” They expressed deep love for the game and its community, promising not to abandon the project.
This announcement follows previous news of layoffs at the studio, where the co-founders notably chose to forgo their own salaries to support the team. Despite the challenges, 1047 Games remains hopeful that Splitgate 2 will eventually shine, but this time, without rushing the process. Splitgate 2 is currently available on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store), Xbox, and PlayStation.
