The development team behind the arcade football title, Rematch, has just dropped its first significant update, moving beyond the minor hotfixes previously released. This comprehensive patch aims to improve various aspects of the game, from its underlying network code to user interface elements and character animations, promising a smoother and more enjoyable experience for players.

Gameplay and Match Improvements

Players will now have more control over their experience with the introduction of a basic gamepad button remapping feature. While a full, advanced system with button combinations is planned for later, this initial step allows for personalized controls. Movement, especially sprinting, has seen a reduction in "rubberbanding" effects, and the game’s handling of packet loss during player movement and interactions has been significantly improved, leading to a more stable online experience.

Goalie performance has received attention, fixing issues where the ball was incorrectly deflected instead of caught due to misjudged ball speed. Further refinements to goalie catch and deflect parameters are expected in future updates. The goal detection system has also been enhanced; decisions are now made with a slight delay to account for network latency, ensuring more accurate goal calls. Camera issues during goal replays, including jerky movements, have been resolved, and player blocking mechanics are now more effective.

Quality-of-life adjustments include fixing the post-match screen skip, allowing players to properly review scores before returning to the league. The pause menu can now be opened at any point during a match, and various crashes that occurred after goals have been resolved.

Visuals and Animations

Animations across the board have been refined for greater fluidity. This includes smoother volleys, more realistic goalie jumps, improved ball deflections, and enhanced static character movements. Visual effects for goals and replays have also been upgraded, adding to the game's presentation.

User Interface and Accessibility

Accessibility features have been expanded with the addition of a colorblind mode, supporting three primary types of color blindness. The team plans to extend this filter in upcoming patches. The player progress screen has been updated for better readability, and custom match settings now allow players to select a voice channel for team communication. The ball indicator arrow will now consistently point in the correct direction, and menu navigation, particularly in customization and social panels, has been made smoother. Various UI display issues, such as rank icons and buttons, have also been fixed.

Minor Tweaks and Bug Fixes

  • Goalies now react to physical collisions with other players, just like field players.
  • Issues with the ball not displaying correctly in menus or at the start of matches have been fixed.
  • Camera behavior when using a mouse and keyboard has been corrected.
  • The interval between voice commands has been increased to prevent spamming.
  • Controller vibration now activates when preparing for a shot, providing better feedback.

What's Next for Rematch?

The Rematch development team is committed to continuous improvement, promising further updates in the coming weeks, along with intermittent hotfixes. Sloclap, the studio behind the game, also plans to release detailed information on ranking systems, matchmaking, and core game mechanics. Active work continues on refining the network code and implementing cross-play functionality, which developers assure is making steady progress, though it requires dedicated effort from specialists.

Players can dive into the updated Rematch experience now on PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and via Game Pass. This patch represents a significant step forward, addressing many player concerns and setting a positive direction for the game's future.
