Phantom Blade Zero Showcases Fresh Gameplay
Chinese developer S-GAME has recently unveiled new gameplay footage for their highly anticipated AAA action RPG, Phantom Blade Zero. This comes just before the team's appearance at ChinaJoy 2025 on August 1st, where more will likely be revealed. Ahead of the event, various journalists and content creators had the opportunity to go hands-on with a demo, sharing their impressions and new gameplay clips.
The demo showcased the "Seven Star Sword Formation" level, featuring sprawling, seamless environments filled with formidable enemies and challenging boss encounters. The new footage provides a clearer look at the game's combat mechanics and visual style, hinting at the high-octane action players can expect.
Not a Soulslike: A Wuxia Action Experience
Crucially, the developers have reiterated that Phantom Blade Zero is not a soulslike, a common misconception since its initial announcement. Soulframe Liang, head of S-GAME, clarified this point, stating, "When we first announced Phantom Blade Zero, people thought that it was a soulslike. But later, when we released several combat demonstrations, gamers noticed that the pace is clearly much higher than in Souls-like games."
Liang further explained that Phantom Blade Zero feels more akin to fast-paced character action games like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden. The developers aim to deliver a spectacular and easy-to-master combat experience firmly rooted in the Wuxia genre, prioritizing fluid, rapid engagements over deliberate, methodical fights.
The Story of Soul's Redemption
The narrative of Phantom Blade Zero centers on Soul, a skilled assassin framed for the murder of the patriarch of a powerful organization known as "The Order." Though Soul managed to escape immediate death, he has only 66 days to live. With this limited time, he embarks on a desperate quest for revenge and to clear his name, adding a compelling urgency to his journey.
Phantom Blade Zero is currently in development for PC and PlayStation 5. A definitive release date has not yet been announced.
This latest wave of gameplay and developer insights offers fans a much clearer picture of what to expect from Phantom Blade Zero. By emphasizing its fast-paced, Wuxia-inspired action over the methodical combat of a soulslike, S-GAME is setting clear expectations and exciting players who prefer high-octane, fluid combat. While the release date remains a mystery, the continued transparency and new looks at the game's thrilling world are building anticipation for its eventual launch.
