Bloodlines 2 Devs Clarify Scope: Not a 'Vampire GTA'

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 Focuses on Detail, Not Scale

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 continues its path towards release, offering new insights despite its tumultuous development journey. In a recent interview with Game Informer, developer The Chinese Room shed light on the game's scope, making it clear they are not aiming to create a 'vampire version of GTA'.

Art Director Ben Matthews emphasized this point, stating, "We are not making GTA. This is not a game with boundless expanses. We are focusing on density of detail, not on scale." This means players should expect a meticulously crafted experience within a focused area of Seattle, rather than a sprawling open world.

A Christmas Seattle Setting

The game unfolds in a Christmas-time Seattle, a deliberate choice by the team. Matthews explained that this setting creates a striking contrast between the bright, festive surface of the city and the dark, hidden world of vampires lurking beneath. Players step into the shoes of Phyre, an Elder vampire who awakens after a century-long slumber in a ruined building, stepping out into the city bathed in lights, ready to explore this stark visual opposition.

While the game will not feature an enormous open world, the accessible parts of Seattle are highly detailed. The Chinese Room has gone to great lengths to ensure the authenticity and atmosphere of the setting, paying particular attention to the Pioneer Square district.

Recreating Seattle's Authentic Atmosphere

To achieve this authenticity, Creative Director Alex Skidmore even traveled to Seattle himself to gather references. The team utilized Google Maps, photographs, and personal observations to painstakingly recreate the urban environment. Special attention was given to the city's dark alleys, complete with their distinct pipes, vents, and fire escapes, which are crucial for the game's immersive, shadowy feel.

This focused approach suggests that Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 aims to deliver a deep, atmospheric role-playing experience rather than a broad sandbox. Players can look forward to exploring a richly detailed, albeit confined, section of Seattle, delving into its hidden vampiric underbelly. The game is slated for release in October, coming to PC (via Steam, EGS, and GOG), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with text localization confirmed.
