PEAK Developers Urge Players to Pirate Game Over Roblox Clone
The gaming world has seen its fair share of clones, but rarely do developers openly encourage piracy as an alternative. Yet, that's exactly what Aggro Crab, the studio behind the popular climbing simulator PEAK, has done in response to a new Roblox rip-off called Cliff.
PEAK has been a runaway success, selling over 5 million copies since its release, making it a prime target for imitators. However, the developers of Cliff didn't just borrow PEAK's core concept; they wrapped it in a highly aggressive monetization scheme. Players in Cliff are reportedly asked to spend Roblox's in-game currency for almost everything, and the game even features loot boxes. This blatant imitation combined with predatory practices proved too much for Aggro Crab.
In a direct statement, Aggro Crab made their feelings clear: "tbh would rather you pirate our game than play this microtransaction-riddled @Roblox slop ripoff." This unusual call highlights their deep frustration with the clone's exploitative design, emphasizing that a pirated version of their game offers a better experience than one riddled with excessive microtransactions.
Currently, PEAK is available exclusively on PC via Steam. Following the success of PEAK, Aggro Crab has also expressed interest in developing console versions, potentially bringing their unique climbing experience to a wider audience in the future. Their vocal stance against the Roblox clone serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges developers face with intellectual property and aggressive monetization in free-to-play platforms.
