Original Metroid Composer Reveals Touching Story Behind Game's Final Theme

A Hidden Heart Behind a Classic Score

August 6, 2025, marked the 39th anniversary of the classic action-platformer Metroid's release in Japan. To commemorate this milestone, the game's acclaimed composer, Hirokazu Tanaka, shared a truly touching story about the creation of the game's memorable final musical theme.

Tanaka revealed that he composed this particular melody with one specific person in mind: a dedicated staff member who was focused on debugging Metroid. During the final stages of testing, the entire development team would gather in one room, rallying behind this individual as he played through the game. Tanaka's deepest wish was for the music to evoke powerful emotions in this tester upon completing the adventure.

Reflecting on this unique development process, Tanaka shared on his social media:

"The most memorable part of Metroid's development was the final debugging phase. We had one staff member, older than the main team, who wasn't actively involved in core production. Everyone gathered in one room, watching and cheering him on as he played through Metroid. I composed the ending theme specifically for him, hoping he would feel a truly profound sense of emotion upon completion. This is a real story."

He also recalled the intense atmosphere as he and his colleagues watched the tense battle against Mother Brain and the subsequent, famously challenging escape sequence. This part of Metroid is known for its difficulty, with the blaring alarm and stressful environment often leading players to fail the escape. Tanaka humorously noted, "I think those who played the game understand that even if you quickly defeat Mother Brain, the escape scene is surprisingly difficult, lol. The alarm is loud, it causes stress, and you end up failing."

To heighten the experience for their dedicated debugger, the team would constantly switch to a large monitor and crank up the volume, creating an incredibly immersive and dramatic atmosphere. Tanaka emphasized that the entire team found immense joy in this unique debugging process.

This heartwarming anecdote sheds new light on the creative process behind one of Nintendo's most iconic games. It’s a testament to the passion and personal connections that can fuel game development, leaving players with a deeper appreciation for the classic moments within Metroid's legacy.
