Lyrical Games Enters the Publishing Scene
Lyrical Media has officially launched Lyrical Games, a brand-new independent publishing division dedicated to supporting creators of "high-quality indie games." The announcement, made via the company’s X (formerly Twitter) account, marks a significant new player in the video game publishing landscape, promising to fill a crucial gap for developers looking to bring their ambitious projects to a global audience.
A New Home for "Triple-I" Titles
Lyrical Games is positioning itself to cater to the so-called "triple-I" segment of the market. This means focusing on games that aren't tiny, experimental indie titles, nor are they massive AAA blockbusters. Instead, Lyrical Games aims to publish author-driven projects that boast considerable scale and ambition, offering a middle ground that many developers find hard to navigate with existing publishers.
Leading this new venture is Blake Rochkind, who previously spearheaded business development at Private Division. He is joined by Roger Kurtz, formerly the head of production, also at Private Division. The team is further bolstered by a group of seasoned industry veterans who have contributed to projects from renowned companies like Devolver Digital, Humble Games, and Microsoft.
Developer-Centric Philosophy
A core tenet of Lyrical Games' approach is a deep commitment to developers. Alexander Black, founder of Lyrical Media, stated the company's desire to be a home for powerful stories, regardless of their form. For games, this translates to providing developers with the necessary resources and a direct path to their audience. "We want to support truly passionate game creators, reducing the distance between their art and the gamers it can touch," Black emphasized. "At Lyrical Games, we know for sure: we are nothing without our partners and their vision."
Blake Rochkind further elaborated on this, highlighting that Lyrical Games was created as a "new type of publisher." This includes an emphasis on genuine partnership, flexible terms, and crucially, allowing developers to retain ownership of their intellectual property. The publisher promises a transparent approach and support for those who share a unified vision not only for the game itself but also for its target audience.
"At Lyrical Games, we firmly believe that developers often understand their own creation best," Rochkind explained. "Today, there's too much noise, and a publisher isn't really necessary for everyone. We created Lyrical Games as a partner developers will genuinely want to work with. In the current reality, it's more important than ever for a team and a publisher to have a shared, holistic vision from the very beginning – not only for the game itself, but also for its audience, and how best to reach them."
Upcoming Projects and Industry Impact
Lyrical Games already has three projects in production, with one of them being developed by the acclaimed studio Blackbird Interactive. The company has promised announcements about these titles will be made soon. This immediate pipeline suggests Lyrical Games is ready to make a significant impact from day one.
The team is confident that they can offer some of the best terms available in the high-budget indie segment. This ambition mirrors the success seen with Annapurna Interactive, a publishing division launched by film company Annapurna Pictures in 2016, which has since delivered a consistent stream of high-quality, diverse projects from talented studios.
In an industry where major publishers increasingly bet on proven hits, and smaller studios are often confined to limited budgets, Lyrical Games aims to be a haven for developers willing to take creative risks and make bold choices. This new venture could mean more diverse and ambitious games for players, and a much-needed supportive environment for creative development teams.
