Guitar Hero Veterans Form New Studio, RedOctane Games, to Revitalize Rhythm Genre

Rhythm Game Pioneers Launch RedOctane Games

A brand new game development studio, RedOctane Games, has officially opened its doors, signaling a strong focus on the rhythm game genre. The team behind this new venture brings together a mix of seasoned veterans, including those instrumental in the creation of iconic titles like Guitar Hero and DJ Hero, alongside fresh talent emerging from the vibrant rhythm game community.

The studio's first project is already underway, with an official announcement anticipated before the end of 2025. This news comes as a beacon of hope for fans of music and rhythm-based gameplay, promising a fresh wave of innovation.

Leadership and Vision

At the helm of RedOctane Games is Simon Ebejer, who previously served as the head of Vicarious Visions and was a Vice President at Blizzard Entertainment. Ebejer’s extensive experience in the rhythm genre includes his time as a producer at Neversoft Entertainment, where he worked on numerous popular titles such as Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, Band Hero, Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, and Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock.

Adding to the studio's formidable expertise are Charles Huang and Kai Huang, the original creators of Guitar Hero. They have joined RedOctane Games’ advisory board, lending their invaluable experience and deep understanding of the genre to guide the studio's direction and future projects.

RedOctane Games has made its mission clear: to bring rhythm games back stronger, more precise, and with a deeper connection than ever before. As stated on their official website, the studio aims to do more than just make games; they aspire to create rhythmic experiences that blend cutting-edge controllers, iconic projects, and an active community moving to the same beat. They emphasize that this journey is a shared one from day one, deeply rooted in community collaboration.

A Community-Driven Approach

A core philosophy at RedOctane is to maintain a close relationship with players. The development process will actively involve the community from the very beginning, ensuring that fans are an integral part of the creative journey.

“Rhythm games aren’t just about gameplay. It’s a feeling, a flow, a connection to the music and each other,” says Simon Ebejer. “RedOctane Games is our way of giving back to the genre what it’s given us and moving it forward in a new, exciting direction.”

A Familiar Name Reborn

The name RedOctane might sound familiar to long-time rhythm game enthusiasts, and for good reason. The original RedOctane, founded in 1999 by brothers Charles and Kai Huang, started as a video game rental service and accessory manufacturer. It rose to global prominence with the release of Guitar Hero in 2005, a collaboration with Harmonix. The immense success of the series led to Activision acquiring the company in 2006 for nearly $100 million. Despite its achievements, Activision eventually closed the original RedOctane in 2010.

This new RedOctane Games carries on a legacy, now with a fresh vision and a team committed to pushing the boundaries of rhythm gaming once more. For fans eagerly awaiting the next big beat, this news brings significant excitement and anticipation for what's to come.
