Yohei Shimbori, known for his significant work on the Dead or Alive series, has announced his departure from Bandai Namco. Shimbori confirmed he will leave the studio at the end of August, having completed his role as Assistant Game Director on the critically acclaimed fighting title, Tekken 8.
Shimbori’s career in the gaming industry spans over a decade and a half, primarily marked by his extensive tenure at Koei Tecmo. During his time there, he played a pivotal role in shaping the Dead or Alive franchise. He directed notable entries such as Dead or Alive Dimensions, Dead or Alive 5 and its subsequent updated versions, and also served as both director and producer for Dead or Alive 6.
In 2021, Shimbori transitioned from Koei Tecmo to Bandai Namco. There, he contributed to the development of Tekken 8, focusing specifically on the game's out-of-game systems, which include elements like menus, online lobbies, and other non-combat related features.
In a message shared with fans and colleagues, Shimbori expressed his heartfelt thanks:
“I will be leaving Bandai Namco Studios at the end of this month. During my time here, I was involved in various projects, but I was particularly deeply involved in the creation of Tekken 8, mainly in the parts not directly related to gameplay. I received support from many people, including our players. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude. Thank you very much!”
He also hinted at his future aspirations, stating, “I won’t go into details about my future plans, but now I will have more freedom and opportunities to take on new challenges to make the most of my strengths. It will probably take time, but I will continue to work hard to bring you fun games, and I hope for your continued support.”
Shimbori’s next career move remains undisclosed. His departure from Koei Tecmo in 2021 coincided with a period of dormancy for the main Dead or Alive series. The last numbered title was released in 2019, with Koei Tecmo since focusing on spin-offs like Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Scarlet and Venus Vacation Prism, primarily available in Asian markets. His move from a directorial role on a major fighting franchise to a behind-the-scenes position at Bandai Namco, and now his subsequent departure, marks a significant moment for one of the fighting game genre's prominent figures. Players will be keen to see what new challenges Shimbori embraces and what new games he helps bring to life in the future.
