Bithell Games Announces Significant Layoffs
Bithell Games, the independent studio behind acclaimed titles like Thomas Was Alone, John Wick Hex, and the recent TRON game series, has announced the layoff of most of its full-time staff. Studio founder Mike Bithell shared the news, stating that 11 employees have been let go.
Challenges in Securing Future Projects
The decision to reduce staff was made after the company struggled to secure funding for its next major project. Mike Bithell explained that securing financial partners has become increasingly difficult in the current market, affecting many game development teams looking for investments in 2024 and 2025.
Bithell emphasized that the studio made efforts to support the departing team members, providing advance notice and severance packages to ease their transition. He also highly recommended the talent of the affected individuals to other developers, inviting studios with vacancies to reach out for connections.
"On the road to our latest game shipping, it became clear we weren't immune to the challenges many game development teams have faced when looking for financial partners in 2024 and 2025. Fortunately, we were able to communicate these challenges in advance and support affected staff to ease their departure as much as possible with severance."
"Crucially, this was an incredible team of incredibly talented people. If you're a developer with open roles, any one of these specialists would be an amazing addition to your studio; please get in touch if we can help make a connection."

Impact on the TRON Series and Future Games
The layoffs come shortly after Bithell Games released TRON: Catalyst in June, an action-adventure sequel to TRON: Identity. A previous review of TRON: Catalyst had expressed hope for a third installment to elegantly conclude the series. However, with the current studio restructuring, the future of this potential trilogy appears uncertain.
While TRON: Catalyst was praised for its atmosphere and ambiance, its story and gameplay received mixed feedback, suggesting a possible overcorrection from player criticisms of TRON: Identity. The review noted that despite attempts to add action and larger environments, the execution fell short. The game's ending hinted at more adventures within the Archisystem, but it remains to be seen if Bithell Games will be able to complete a third game, or if they will refine existing concepts for a strong conclusion given these significant challenges.
