Two Years of Adventure: Baldur's Gate 3 Celebrates Its Anniversary

It's been two years since Larian Studios launched Baldur's Gate 3, and the beloved RPG has grown far beyond just a sequel to a classic series. The development team is celebrating this milestone, expressing immense pride in a community that hasn't just embraced their world, but actively transformed it.

A Modding Phenomenon

Since official mod support was added to the game in September 2024, the mod.io platform has seen over 8,500 user-created modifications. These mods have collectively amassed over 265 million downloads. One particularly popular mod, 'Withers Big Naturals,' alone accounts for over 250,000 downloads. In July, the community organized a fan event where 85 creators developed more than 160 new mods, which have already been downloaded over 150,000 times. From surreal new abilities to duck earrings and even Gale's underwear as a weapon, players' imaginations have known no bounds.

Larian has pledged to expand its modding tools, keeping a close eye on the creative output of its players. "You raise the bar with every new mod, and we want to meet that level. So, we're working on expanding the official toolkit to give you even more freedom. Details coming soon!" stated Larian Studios.

Player Statistics Revealed

This year, Larian chose to share some less obvious but equally fascinating player statistics. For instance:
  • 1.1 million players have completed Baldur's Gate 3 in Tactician Mode.
  • Nearly half a million players conquered the game in Honour Mode.
  • An impressive 4,647 skilled and daring players managed to finish the game in Honour Mode using only a level one character.

The in-game photo mode has also become a hub for player creativity, capturing everything from rabbits and humorous poses to classic pop culture references. Larian frequently shares the best of these unique screenshots on their social media channels.

What's Next for Larian Studios?

The Larian team continues to host developer streams, offering insights into the game's creation process. Fans can also look forward to their presence at PAX West in Seattle this September.

Meanwhile, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke offered a glimpse into the studio's future projects. From his comments, it seems unlikely that fans should expect simply a new version of Baldur's Gate 3. In a tweet from August 3, 2025, Vincke shared:

"Crazy to think it’s only been two years. It’s truly been life changing. Probably worth writing about one day. But I can spoil the biggest takeaway. BG3 was what allowed us to do our next crazy thing. How that will pan out is anyone’s guess but I can assure you we’re working hard… to make you genuinely have fun, and in unexpected ways. I can’t wait to show you but you’ll have to wait a little longer. We need time to get this right. It’ll be worth it though."

This suggests Larian's next big title will be quite different from Baldur's Gate 3. While fans speculate about a new Divinity game, Larian appears to be planning something truly unconventional. It's even possible the studio might move away from its signature turn-based and party-based gameplay.

The focus has largely shifted to new endeavors, with the eighth patch marking the final major update for Baldur's Gate 3. Its continued evolution will now primarily rest in the hands of its dedicated modding community.

Baldur's Gate 3, the acclaimed Game of the Year 2023, is available on PC (Steam, GOG), Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
