Horizon Franchise Hits Major Sales Milestone
The popular Horizon game series has achieved an impressive new sales milestone, surpassing 38 million units sold worldwide. This significant figure was revealed as part of a recent lawsuit filed by Sony against Chinese tech giant Tencent.
This marks a considerable jump from the previously reported sales. In May 2023, Guerrilla Games, the developers behind the franchise, announced that the total sales for the adventures of Aloy had reached 32.7 million copies. This means that in just over two years, the series has added more than 5 million units to its cumulative sales.
A Growing World of Horizon
The Horizon franchise began its journey with the critically acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017. This original title was later expanded with the story-driven DLC, The Frozen Wilds. The highly anticipated sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, launched in 2022, also receiving its own narrative expansion.
The series has since diversified its offerings:
- Horizon Call of the Mountain (February 2023): A PlayStation VR2 exclusive that put players in a new character's shoes, offering a unique perspective on the world.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered (2024): An updated version of the original game for modern platforms.
- LEGO Horizon Adventures (2024): A family-friendly, brick-built take on the Horizon universe.
Looking ahead, the future of Horizon appears bright with a full third main installment reportedly in development, alongside an upcoming massively multiplayer online (MMO) title.
Expanding Beyond Games
The reach of the Horizon universe extends far beyond its core video game releases. Protagonist Aloy has made cameo appearances in other popular games, including Fortnite, Genshin Impact, and Fall Guys. The franchise has also branched out into other forms of media, with comics and themed LEGO sets available for fans.
Perhaps most notably, a live-action film adaptation is currently in the works, a collaboration between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions, signaling the franchise's growing cultural impact.
The Lawsuit that Revealed the Numbers
The latest sales figures came to light during Sony's legal action against Tencent. Sony has accused Tencent of plagiarism, alleging that Tencent's upcoming game, Light of Motiram, bears striking similarities to Horizon Zero Dawn. Both Sony's legal team and members of the press and gaming community have pointed out that the game appears to be a direct copy of the Horizon formula. It was within these legal proceedings that the 38-million-unit sales data was disclosed, highlighting the significant commercial success Sony is seeking to protect.
This new sales milestone reaffirms Horizon's status as one of PlayStation's tentpole franchises and a major success story for Guerrilla Games. The continued growth in sales, coupled with the expanding multimedia presence and future game development plans, indicates a strong and enduring future for the world of Horizon and its fans.
