God of War TV Series Will Keep 2018 Game's Spirit, Showrunner Confirms

God of War TV Series Aims to Capture the Original Game's Spirit

Fans eager for the live-action adaptation of Sony's acclaimed God of War game have received new insights from showrunner Ronald D. Moore. The series, which is being developed by Sony and Amazon, will be based on the 2018 game set in Norse mythology. Moore clarified that while the show will be a faithful adaptation, it won't be a shot-for-shot remake.

Moore explained that the creative team intends to honor the core narrative and characters from Sony Santa Monica's original work. "We want to keep the story. We want to keep the characters and the spirit of the original," Moore stated. However, he emphasized that it's an adaptation that will find opportunities to interpret certain elements differently for the live-action format. This approach allows for creative freedom while maintaining fidelity to the beloved source material.

Kratos, Atreus, and the Deep Lore

The series will naturally feature Kratos as the lead, with his son Atreus playing a significant role in the show's narrative. Moore also hinted that the adaptation might weave in aspects of Kratos's past adventures, potentially drawing from the character's history before the 2018 game rebooted the franchise. This suggests a richer, more expansive portrayal of Kratos's journey.

Currently, the God of War series is in the scriptwriting phase, a process Moore reports is progressing well. He praised the writing team and expressed his profound admiration for the depth and scale of the mythology within the game. A key figure in the show's development is Sony Santa Monica's creative director, Cory Barlog, who serves as an executive producer. Moore lauded Barlog, describing him as a "genius" who possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of the God of War universe, capable of explaining every intricate detail and connection within its lore for hours.

Showrunner's Vision and Production Timeline

Despite not having a background in video game adaptations and not being an avid gamer himself, Moore was immediately captivated by the 2018 God of War story after watching a playthrough compilation of all its cutscenes. He noted that the themes of father-son relationships, which are central to God of War, resonate with his previous work on shows like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

While excitement builds, fans will have to be patient. Filming for the first ten episodes is not expected to begin until 2026 at the earliest. Moore previously revealed that Amazon has already committed to two seasons of the show, indicating strong confidence in the project. The exact premiere date for the first season, however, remains unannounced. This early two-season order suggests a long-term commitment to bringing Kratos's epic Norse saga to the screen, promising a detailed and expansive adaptation for fans worldwide.
